- Modern Mountain Gathering Baskets
This grant was awarded to complete the task of creating a Modern Mountain Gathering Basket. I wanted to create something that was a mix. Just like I am and how most of us are. I wanted to create something intriguing and modern. Walking gathering baskets have been used since pre-Hispanic times to traverse the mountains and collect berries and other small items. Nantucket baskets are one of Americas only traditional art styles. By mixing these styles together I feel I have created something that us mixed races and cultures can be proud of.
Open Weave Gathering Basket - Hard Wood painted stick with an open basket weave to hold larger items like root vegetables. Created to symbolize the land and the patterns of growth.
Nantucket Style Walking Basket - Traditional Nantucket style basket made with Maple and Walnut staves. A Walnut base and rim. Woven with natural cane on a sanded pine stick. This basket is made to replicate a modern version of Hispanic walking baskets. A style of basket that has seemed to be lost in time. By combining American traditional style Nantucket basketry and Hispanic walking baskets I created a mixture of cultures and traditions to express my place in the world.
